Claudia Sanhueza participated in Dialogue in the Senate of the Republic

The Director of CEAS presented in Dialogue convened by Ricardo Lagos Weber and Carlos Montes.

This Thursday, December 5, the Dialogue “How do we finance the social changes that Chile needs?” Was held, in the Santiago Senate located in Morandé 441; The activity aimed to discuss the financing of the changes demanded following the social outbreak.

The guests to exhibit were Ignacio Briones, Oscar Landerretche, Rodrigo Vergara, Roberto Zahler, Nicolás Eyzaguirre, and the Director of the Center for the Economy and Social Policies, Claudia Sanhueza.

The Minister of Finance Ignacio Briones was the one who started the presentation, proposing a priority social agenda to solve the most urgent demands of citizens, such as pensions, health and early childhood care. According to the minister, social reforms must be financed with non-transitory permanent income.

Despite certain differences in the vision of the amount of taxes to the private sector, several of the guests agreed that they consider it necessary to increase the tax burden, and address the problem as a political and non-economic crisis, emphasizing in the deficiencies of the AFPs system, health and pensions.

For its part, Claudia Sanhueza stressed the urgent need for social changes, and Chile's main shortcomings in terms of income distribution and productivity growth. In addition to mentioning national problems and climate change, the Director of CEAS also mentioned that today the expenditure of GDP on health is only 5%, and that if only 4% of spending on each social demand is increased , the social problem would improve considerably because each of the demands is currently bankable.
